Patrick Wong, a consulting engineer at PKW Geosolutions, had an issue with his backyard swimming pool that needed solving. The pool, which was no longer in use, took up a large portion of his yard and was a hassle to maintain.
Drawing on his professional engineering training, Patrick devised a plan to install a large rainwater harvesting tank in the pool and effectively fill it in. He went ahead with the project and covered the tank with approximately 400mm of gravel, allowing rain infiltration. He had planned to use the new area to practice Tai Chi but found that the gravel was too unstable and sunk easily. Balance is very important in Tai Chi, so he needed a new, more stable solution.
Using his professional background as an engineer, Patrick researched potential solutions to his problem of unstable gravel. He looked at several products that might solve the problem, which led him to the GEOHEX Erosion Control System, a uniquely Australian product that would provide the required strength.
Patrick contacted GEOHEX and discussed his requirements with the team.
“I did the installation myself and found it easy to assemble and cut to the required size. I was able to fill the GEOHEX with gravel, which sealed up the former swimming pool and made the site level.
“As a bonus, I came up with the idea of incorporating coloured gravel, and because of the honeycomb pattern I formed the Yin and Yang symbol in white and black gravel. This fits very nicely with my Tai Chi practice and it looks great too. I’ve had my Tai Chi classmates over to test it out, and they are all suitably impressed.”
With its unique honeycomb cell structure, the GEOHEX Erosion Control System is designed to provide strong ground reinforcement and sediment control in all conditions. In construction applications, GEOHEX Erosion Control System can be combined with grass, gravel or a sand/soil mixture providing a complement to surrounding materials and other architecture such as the installation of plastic driveway grids.
The GEOHEX permeable paving system is the ideal solution for laying over the top of objects like water tanks. Its unique hexagonal plastic paving grid-like structure is designed to keep gravel in place without any rutting and spreading. With its lightweight design, the GEOHEX Erosion Control System panels are easy to install in many applications.
Made from high impact resistant, 100% recycled, copolymer polypropylene as plastic paving, the GEOHEX Erosion Control System is Australian made, environmentally friendly, and designed to reduce maintenance and logistics costs while at the same time increasing safety and water conservation.
A satisfied client with a very usable and functional area in his own backyard – which not only works well but also looks great too.
